January-2017

  1. Gujarat beats Mumbai in Indore to clinch its first Ranji Trophy Title: Parthiv Patel capped-off a brilliant season for Gujarat after winning the Ranji Trophy final for Gujarat, notching up the maiden title for the state at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Captain and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel notched-up a solid 143 to help guide Gujarat to a win against Mumbai in the final.
  2. Saina Nehwal wins the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold in Sarawak: Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal notched up her first title after a career-threatening injury by claiming the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold with a hard-fought victory in the summit clash. Up against 18-year-old Thai Pornpawee Chochuwong, the top-seeded London Olympics bronze-medallist triumphed 22-20 22-20 in a 46-minute clash. This was her 23rd title overall.
  3. Serena Williams defeats Venus Williams to clinch the Australian Open, her 23rd Grand Slam.
  4. Roger Federor wins an epic final against Rafael Nadal to win the Australian Open, his 18th Grand Slam title.

February-2017

  1. Kalinga Lancers wins the Hockey India League beating Dalbang Mumbai 4-1: Kalinga Lancers made amends to lift their maiden Hockey India League title, defeating Dabang Mumbai 4-1 in the final. Dabang Mumbai, who were leaders at the end of the league stage, could not find their best as Kalinga Lancers emerged victorious to claim the purse of Rs 2.5 crore. The runners-up received Rs 1.25 crore.
  2. India beats New Zealand 4-1 in the Davis Cup in Pune: Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri scored back-to-back wins over New Zealand on Sunday (Feb 5) to give India a 4-1 victory on the final day of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tie in Pune. New Zealand’s Finn Tearney and Jose Statham both lost their reverse singles matches, with Ramanathan beating Tearney in the fourth match 7-5, 6-1, 6-0 followed by Bhambri’s 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win over Statham in the dead rubber. Ramanathan, ranked 276, faced tough moments in the opening set that clocked in at nearly 51-minutes but prevailed over his opponent to win 7-5 at Pune’s Balewadi Sports Complex before taking the next two sets in a 6-1, 6-0 rout.
  3. The duo of Heena Sidhu and Jitu Rai bags gold in the mixed air pistol event in the shooting world cup.

March-2017

  1. Tamil Nadu beats Bengal by 37 runs to clinch it fifth Vijay Hazare Trophy domestic one-day title.
  2. India beats Australia by eight wickets in fourth and final test in Dharmasala, to clinch the Border-Gavaskar series 2-1
  3. R. Ashwin voted ICC Cricketer and Test Cricketer of the year for 2016

April- 2017

  1. P.V. Sindhu wins the Indian Open in New Delhi, defeating Carolina Marin: An impeccable performance from PV Sindhu helped her win a maiden women’s singles title at the $325,000 India Open Superseries in New Delhi on Sunday. The 21-year-old came out with her best game to defeat reigning Olympic and World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain 21-19, 21-16 in 47 minutes in the final. This was the Hyderabadi’s second successive victory over the top seed since Sindhu’s loss to Carolina in the famous 2016 Rio Olympics final. Sindhu had also beaten Carolina in the Dubai World Superseries Finals in December 2016. However, this was the Olympic silver medallist Sindhu’s second Superseries title after also winning the China Open in November 2016.
  2. Pankaj Advani wins the sixth Asian Billiads title, beating Sourav Kothari
  3. Sai Praneeth wins the Singapore Opn, outlasting K. Srikanth.
  4. Joshna Chinappa wins the women’s title in the Asian squash championshi in Chennai.

May-2017

  1. Bajrang Punia bags the 65kg gold in the Asian wrestling championship in Chennai:Bajrang Punia ended India’s gold medal drought on the penultimate day of the Asian Wrestling Championship, taming South Korea’s Seunghui Lee 6-2 in the men’s 65kg freestyle category at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. Bajrang, who has been mentored by Olympic bronze-medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, made a dramatic comeback in the second round of the contest to win the title. After trailing by two points in the opening three minutes, the Indian was more aggressive in the second round, unleashing counterattacks to which his rival had no response. Bajrang’s strategy paid off as he enhanced the lead from 3-2 to 5-2 when the bout was five minutes old.

June- 2017

July- 2017

  1. The Indian men’s footbal team reaches its best ever FIFA ranking of 96 in two decades.
  2. G. Lakshamanan becomes the first Indian to bag to 5000m and 10000m titles in the Asian athletics championship, in Bhubaneswar.
  3. Ravi Shashtri takes over as the chief coach of the Indian team.
  4. The Indian Women’s cricket team loses to England in the World Cup final at Lords in England.

August- 2017

  1. Justin Gatlin pips Usain Bolt in the World Athletics championship in London.
  2. Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa bag the men’s and women’s National Squash titles.

September- 2017

  1. India beats Srilanka in the fifth ODI at Colombo to win the ODI series 5-0.
  2. PV Sindhu defeats Nozomi Okuhara of Japan to win the Korea Open Super Series

October- 2017

  1. India beats Malaysia 2-1 in the final in Dhaka to clinch its third Asia Cup Hockey title.
  2. K. Srikanth beats Korean Lee Hyun II to win the Denmark Open Super Series title.
  3. Lewis Hamilton joins select club of five drivers with four or more formula 1 world titles.
  4. England beats Spain 5-2 in the final to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Kolkata.
  5. K. Srikanth bags the French Open Super Series.

November- 2017

  1. The Indian Women’s hockey team regains the Asia Cup after 13 years.
  2. Mary Kom clinches gold in the Asian women’s boxing championship
  3. Mirabai Chanu wins the women’s 48 kg gold at the world weigh-lifting champioships in Anaheim, USA

December- 2017

  1. Virat Kohli hits his sixth double hundred, surpasses Brian Lara for most double tons by a Test Captain. Kohli also becomes the Second Indian Player after Vinoo Mankad and the 13th overall to post two innings of 200 in the same Test Series. Don Bradman had achieved the feat four times, including three innings of 200-plus versus England in 1930. Kohli also the first Indian captain to complete 1000 runs in a calendar year twice.
  2. Rohit Sharma scores his third ODI double century in the second match against Srilanka in Mohali, become the first batsman to do so.
  3. PV Sindhu wins silver in the BWF World Super Series final, losing the Japns Akane Yamahuchi in the final in Dubai.
  4. Viswanathan Anand wins the world rapid chess championship title in Riyadh.
